Rarearth was founded in Australia by someone who knows this market from the inside — not as a jeweller, but as an investor who spent years navigating it without the tools it deserved.

Where it started

Five years ago, our founder began investing in Argyle pink diamonds — one of the most compelling tangible assets available to Australian investors following the closure of the Argyle mine. What followed was an education not just in the stones themselves, but in the significant inefficiencies of the market surrounding them.

Prices for stones of near-identical specification varied considerably from store to store. There was no centralised reference point, no transparent comparison, and no reliable way for a private individual to determine fair market value without physically walking between jewellers and cross-referencing specifications by hand. That is exactly what our founder did — and through careful research, was able to identify undervalued stones and build a considered portfolio over time.

Then came the next challenge: selling.

When the time came to liquidate part of that portfolio, the options were limited. Jewellery stores levy commissions of 10% or more on the sale of items outside their own inventory. Auction houses charge their own fees. And in both cases, the reach is local — a handful of potential buyers, in a single city, seeing a single listing.
